This is a 5 star quality event. There are 34 hours left to see it. I’m going back again to check in case the whole thing wasn’t just a mirage.
« This » is the Simon Hantaï exhibition at the Beaubourg Pompidou Centre in Paris.
5 stars for the way in which it’s been put together. Very simple. Chronological. Falls naturally into phases. Like listening to all of Archie Shepp’s recordings and discovering the moment when everything finally becomes « simple » and light and (but this is of course subjective) beautiful.
5 stars for the technical and process innovations (« pliage » or folding of the canvass) that Hantaï invented or discovered and exploited (as any paradigm worth it’s salt should be).
5 stars for the fact that he stopped when he thought he had nothing further to add.
So fifteen stars in all.
It’s open all day today and closes tomorrow, Monday 2nd September at 21.00.
