We started the official programme this morning. 815 all ITMPs were already in the TSE coffeee area. At 8.30 we were in Anna Liisa’s advanced business French class. Everything was in French! 7 Finns and 7 French. Everyone introduced themselves en français bien sur. The Finnish students presented information on 4 companies: Nokia, Marimekko, Koné & Angry Birds. Fantastic atmosphere. Tonight all ITMPs are going to Aleksi’s house for a party.
Then we moved from room 06 to room 13. There, waiting for us was Matti Mäntymäki who did his PhD on Habbo Hotel and Angry Birds and is an expert on the Finnish game industry.
150 games companies in Finland with a revenue of 270M€ and 1800 employees. Not a major industry but growing fast – 25% per year. The aggregated revenue of console, computers and smartphones industry is around 100 G$. Companies like Supercell, Rovio, Remedy, Redlynx.
Shadow Cities plays on the real and virtual confusion. And blurs the concept of « real » and « game ». Your GPS locates you in the real world and connects you to other players in the real world, you are claiming real and virtual territories.
Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is also playing with multiple identities and crossing borders between real and unreal life, Matti says he’s too old for this now, but for kids it’s normal. Pre frontal cortex gets more blood. Fundamental biological influence on human beings and may start to change the brain structure. Less good, this can empede ability to feel empathy. My ISBS1 kids did a good controversy on this last November.
Matti’s presentations sparked a real discussion and mini controversy among the ITMP students. Business benefits versus social benefits.
Next we go for lunch and the we visit Teleste company.
