Hamlet and project management… « To be or not to be? » How much PM do we need?

It depends…
As little or as much as necessary of course. Maybe none at all. Maybe lots. You, the project manager, have to navigate between undernourishment and overkill.
Isabel Galvis, an excellent student from the Global Innovation Management Masters degree at the Turku School of Economics in Finland, drew my attention to an interview with Nir Zuk, founder of Palo ALto Networks, in FORBES MAGAZINE
whose headline is « Project Managers Will Kill Your Company »
http://www.forbes.com/sites/calebmelby/2013/04/02/project-managers-will-kill-your-company-advice-from-palo-alto-networks-founder-nir-zuk/
Replace « will » by « could » and he’s absolutely right. If Stefan Csosz and I had had this quote in 2008 when we gave our paper on « controversies in project management » at the IPMA world congress in Rome, it would have brought the house down!
There is no silver bullet solution. No magic potion. It really does depend.
The late Jürgen Hauschildt summed this up wonderfully in (the 4th edition) of his masterpiece textbook Innovationsmanagement with the inverted U shape curve below.  Any opinions?…Any other exemples?…

    Hi,
IMO, the question would be more « what kind of PM or leadership » would a company need?
    Agile Leadership fosters innovation.
Forbes message is more that bureaucracy and politics are threatening innovation.
And the vectors for these 2 threats are more within company culture…
    What do you think?
